2009 READ FOR THE RECORD The 2009 Jumpstart Read for the Record Event, presented by the Junior League of Greater Covington, took place on Thursday, October 8, 2009 at Koop Drive in Mandeville from 9:30 am to 2:00 pm. In this effort to promote childhood literacy, hundreds of thousands of people around the world opened Eric Carle’s beloved book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar and read aloud to children in their communities. Readers of all ages joined together to break the world record for the most children reading the same book on the same day. Activities for Children & Grownups Alike: New Orleans Hornets Giveaways Special Appearances by the Honeybees Dance Team and Mascot Hugo Hornets Bookmobile gave away free books to all participants Bob Licht Read The Very Hungry Caterpillar Port A Puppet Children's Entertainment Books Donated by Southeast LA AHEC Audubon Nature Institute Bug Mobile New Orleans Saints Experience including an inflatable slide and tackling dummy Brown Orthodontics will print Kid ID's

ABC’s Extreme Home Makeover pre-recorded a taped reading of "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" that was aired on WYES, Channel 12 Thursday, October 8th, 2009. A special appearance by Martha, from the animated PBS series MARTHA SPEAKS aired at 10:00 am on the day of the event.
